CRYSTALS Single Crystal Suite

How to instruct Crystals to stop auto-updating of the model window

For refining a large structure and peforming minor operations, it can be convenient to not update the model structure automatically. Also, some traditional crystal users may not like the structure drawing slowing them down - as well as time delays if doing lots of task switching between other programs.

To stop auto-updating of the structure model, type the following on the script input command line.

\set autoupdate off

To then manually update the model type:

#DISP
END

In the latest Crystals, this can also be done via the GUI (Graphical User Interface) using the Model, Update Model menu.

If you are switching between a number of programs, and it is taking a while for Crystals to redraw the structure (of which the viewing is optional for this stage of the refinement); one trick is to exclude/erase most of the atoms. Then tell Crystals not to do model updating.

\set autoupdate off

Then re-import the model. Now things will fly on task switching as Crystals will not update the model with all the imported atoms.

If you wish, you can still manually update the model type:

#DISP
END
