INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
Powder XRD ideal for crystalline mixture analysis:

- Each component produces characteristic pattern superimposed on those of the other components – unscrambling these superimposed patterns leads to identification of the components
-
- Intensity of lines in each components pattern is proportional to the concentration of that component, disregarding the effects of absorption.
Quantitative analyses first undertaken in the 1920’s and 30’s (eg Clarke and Reynolds developed scheme for mine dust analysis using an internal standard procedure).
